Belize City is the center of the country, with transport and boats going in all directions. The Bliss Institute

The most important cultural center of Belize is the Bliss Institute. Owes its origin and name to the Baron Bliss, an Englishman who came to Belize in the 20's for a vacation. General Information about Belize

Belize's official language is English, but the Creoles (the largest ethnic group) speak their own colorful dialect and standard English. Spanish is the main language in the north and in some towns of the west. You may also hear Mayan languages, Chinese, German Mennonite, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi, and Garifuna (the language of the Garinagu in the district of Stann Creek). Most people in Belize are Catholic, but the British influence has created a varied and substantial number of Protestant congregations, including Swiss and German Mennonites. Mayan practice of Catholicism is a fascinating fusion of animistic shamanism and Christian rituals.

BELIZE'S TOPONYMY

Some suppose that the word "Belize" is Mayan etymology. Others attribute the toponym of the importance of copper in the territory a British buccaneer named Wallis. The most substantiated is that the Spanish maps of the area called The Beacon or Beacon, most likely be several on the coast where there are many reefs and shoals. Spanish language mapping of the twentieth century prior to the 1970 usually has the name Belize.

LAMANAI MAYAN RUINS

Belize is famous for the Blue Hole, this hole in the ocean was created by the nature. But exist another amazing creation, made by humans, the Lamanai Mayan Ruins.

These old ruins, some time were part of a big Mayan city, and his name, Lamanai, in mayan language is "submerged crocodile", in clear reference to the reptils that lived y still living at the banks of the river Nuevo.
